Hoffman History

Lisbette Lehmann (born August 8, 1886) and George Hoffman (born 1877), and their parents were all born in Russia in small German villages in he vicinity of the larger city of Saratov along the Volga River.  (It took two days to haul grain from the village of Langenfeld, where the Hoffmans were born and lived, to Saratov.)

Lisbette's family name shows the spellings "Lamman" or "Lehmonn" in a small family genealogy book of hers that her daughter Ann filled in as a teenager.  Correspondence from family members in Russia in about 1930 shows the name in the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet which would seem to transliterate to "Lehmann".  This was the spelling used on their son Johnnie's baptismal certificate at the Christ Lutheran Church in Walla Walla just after their arrival in the U.S. on 1912.

The return addresses on these envelopes from Russia show that they cam from Heinrich (Henry) Lehmann (Lisbette's father), station: Krazni-Kut, village: Rosendale (or Rozental), via the city of Saratov.
